Wild World Gardens works to heal the land. Many of the landscapes around us have been degraded or destroyed—often overrun with introduced, aggressive species of plants that outcompete our native plants and do serious ecological damage. Plants like Common Buckthorn, Bush Honeysuckle, Multiflora Rose, Garlic Mustard, Reed Canarygrass, Callery Pear, and many other non-native plants wreak havoc on our local ecosystems by spreading rapidly, choking out native species, and harming habitat for wildlife. There is nothing more disheartening than seeing what once was a beautiful, beneficial Oak Savanna filled with a monoculture of Buckthorn and Honeysuckle. However, we can work with you to repair a damaged landscape. Through a multiyear process, we take an intentional, proactive approach toward ecological restoration that involves:
- Removing noxious, aggressive, non-native plants through cutting, burning, solarizing, and/or chemical treatment
- Understanding the ecosystem (woodland, savanna, prairie, wetland, etc.) then planting and stewarding native species (trees, shrubs, grasses, forbs, groundcovers) that will thrive in that ecosystem
- Preventing the regrowth of non-native plants through ecosystem management (prescribed burns, follow-up treatments, strategic disturbance, etc.)
With this regimen of removal, repair, and prevention, we can help to reestablish biodiversity and rehabilitate a wounded landscape back to a healthy, resilient ecosystem.
